EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Oct. 1, 2019 – Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT), Paramount Pictures and Playtone today announced plans to develop a live-action motion picture based on Mattel’s beloved franchise Major Matt Mason®, which was first introduced in 1966. The movie will star Tom Hanks as Mattel’s “Man in Space.” Hanks, and his partner Gary Goetzman, will also produce the film through their Playtone production company.

Akiva Goldsman, Academy Award® and Golden Globe® Award winner for the screenplay A Beautiful Mind, will write the script based on a short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and screenwriter Michael Chabon. Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures is also one of the film’s producers.

The Major Matt Mason film marks the first theatrical collaboration between Mattel Films and Paramount Pictures. The film will join other Mattel Films projects in development including ones based on Barbie®, Hot Wheels®, Masters of the Universe®, American Girl®, View Master® and Magic 8 Ball®.
